Police keeping an eye out for bad drivers, ahead of holiday season

CALGARY- With the holiday season ramping up, police are working to crack down on distracted driving to make the roads safe for everyone.

In the coming weeks, both uniformed and plainclothes officers plan to hit the streets, keeping an eye out for violations including:

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.
  • using handheld cellphones
  • texting or emailing
  • using electronic devices like laptop computers, video games, cameras, video entertainment displays and programming portable audio players (e.g., MP3 players)
  • entering information on GPS units
  • reading printed materials in the vehicle
  • writing, printing or sketching, and
  • personal grooming

Anyone caught doing those things behind the wheel could face a $172 fine.

Police will also be watching for infractions like speeding, careless driving and unsafe lane changes.
