OTTAWA – Members of Parliament will be busy today at committees dealing with the economy and trade.
Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander appears before a Commons committee hearing witnesses on Bill C-4, the Budget Implementation Act.
The Commons finance committee, meantime, will hear witnesses as the government prepares for the 2014 budget.
Two other Commons committees, international trade and agriculture, hold hearings on the recently signed Canada-European Union trade deal.
Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz may also have something to say about the trade agreement as he speaks at a grain industry gathering.
Other events on Parliament Hill for today include:
– The opposition parties are expected to remain focused on the Senate spending scandal during question period in the House of Commons.
– Manitoba Grand Chief Derek Joseph Nepinak will speak at the Commons aboriginal affairs committee studying Bill C-9, the First Nations Elections Act.
– Auditor General Michael Ferguson will be grilled at the Commons house affairs committee over his review of the secretive Board of Internal Economy.
– Sports minister Bal Gosal will outline how the government is preparing for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
– Several dozen students from across the country will meet with MPs and senators to discuss issues of concern to Canada’s young people, particular access to post-secondary education.
– Gen. Tom Lawson, Canada’s chief of defence staff, will give insights into the country’s military in a speech to the Canadian Club of Ottawa.
– And Gov. Gen. David Johnston will honour teachers and other outstanding Canadians for fostering a better understanding of Canada’s history and heritage.
