Doctor suspended again for questionable medical conduct

POINTE-CLAIRE – Inside the SouthWest One Medical Clinic in Pointe-Claire, you’ll find one of the Quebec’s most controversial doctors.

Fifty-five-year-old Dr. Gilles Bourdon is in hot water – again.

Last year, he was blamed for hundreds of botched colonoscopy exams at the Lakeshore Hospital.

On Monday, the College des Medecins, Quebec’s Order of Physicians, announced the suspension of the surgeon for refusing to respect a cancer patient’s wishes on how she wanted to be treated.

Dr. Bourdon has been suspended for eight months and fined $4000.

Yet it was business as usual on Monday morning in Dr. Bourdon’s office, as the decision does not take effect immediately.

Dr. Bourdon has until December 12 to launch an appeal.

“That is not acceptable in the province of Quebec,” said medical malpractice lawyer Jean-Pierre Menard.

“This doctor needs to be maybe be trained again.”

At one point, Menard’s law firm represented six of Dr. Bourdon’s former patients.

They are suing the West Island doctor, claiming he either gave bad medical advice or poorly managed their cases.

The Quebec Order of Physicians also suspended Dr. Gilles Bourdon in 2009 for other irregularities.
