Wife accused of shooting husband takes stand in own defence

CALGARY – A former teacher accused of shooting her husband to death took the stand in her own defence on Monday.

Heather Wilson-Duncan is charged with the second-degree murder of Barry Duncan at their home near Sundre in December of 2010.

The defence began presenting its arguments on Monday and called Wilson-Duncan as their first witness, asking her to testify about the couple’s drinking habits.

Wilson-Duncan said she and her husband Barry were just normal social drinkers at first, but some days they drank morning till night.

She testified that the day Barry was shot was a day of heavy drinking.

Wilson-Duncan says she drank a bottle of vodka while her husband drank a whole bottle of rye, then they both shared one bottle of wine before they started on another.

The accused testified that the two started arguing over Christmas decorations and Barry went into their bedroom and brought out a gun.

In court last week, 911 tapes were played in which Wilson-Duncan said her husband urged her to shoot him.

She told the dispatcher she thought he was joking and didn’t know the gun was loaded.
