Wi-Fi ban at Victoria elementary schools could soon be lifted

It seems like you can’t escape Wi-Fi wherever you go these days.

Elementary schools in the Victoria district, however,  are one of the only places where you can’t find it.

There is a ban on Wi-Fi at Victoria elementary schools, but that could soon change.

The Victoria district parent advisory council is calling for the ban to be lifted.

The parent group conducted a survey on the issue and found that of the more than 2,800 responses, the majority are in favour of having Wi-Fi in schools.

Ninety-four per cent reported having wireless signals in their homes.

Ultimately, it’s up to the School Board to decide.

The board is currently undergoing a consultation process.

Not everyone is in favour of lifting the ban.

Critics argue that there are health risks associated with Wi-Fi radiation.

“The microwave radiation that’s used in Wi-Fi can cause leakage in the blood brain barrier,  it can cause cognitive impairment. You know when we look back on this and we look into this Wi-Fi in schools, we think why did we do this?” says Dr. Kerry Crofton from Doctors for Safer Schools.

But some medical experts disagree.

The Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Perry Kendall says  low levels of Wi-Fi radiation is not a danger to the public.

“…All of the really good reviews that have looked at all of the evidence would not support the assertion that there are harmful health effects that we need to be worried about.”

If the Victoria School Board decides to lift the ban, it still could take months before the schools go wireless.
