Calgary’s Filipino community rallies to help typhoon survivors

Members of Calgary’s Filipino community are collecting donations to send to the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.

Connie Kriaski, who runs Calgary’s Pinoy Times, a Filipino community newspaper, is gathering donations of clothing, shoes, towels, blankets and non-perishable food items to send to the hardest hit cities in the Philippines.

She is also accepting donations of cash, which will be forwarded to a Manila-based charity.

Kriaski says some typhoon survivors have family in Canada to help support them by sending supplies and money.

She wants to reach out to other Calgarians who want to help, even if they don’t have loved ones in the disaster zone.

“Even if I don’t have any family there, I’d be the one to donate boxes of noodles to them because I believe that I have to give back,” says Kriaski.
