Crosses stand in silent protest against dangers of Highway 8

Drivers on Highway 8 near Glenmore Trail S.W. are seeing a field of crosses, but it has nothing to do with Remembrance Day.

A group of residents has placed the crosses in a silent protest against what they say is government inaction on a dangerous stretch of roadway.

The NOTon8 committee says the highway has the highest volume of semi trailers in Alberta on an undivided road through residential areas.

It also claims the highway has surpassed the twinning requirements for traffic volume since 2003 and telling people to ‘drive safe’ along with adding a new bicycle path, does little to improve safety.

The committee, which claims the province is ‘pandering’ to the trucking industry, says it has contacted both Premier Redford and Transportation Minister Ric McIver outlining its latest concerns and pushing for a big rig ban, but says it has yet to receive a response.

Last May, Alberta Transportation told Global News that twinning the highway is not in the province’s three year plan and that banning trucks from the highway was not under consideration.
