Man dead after altercation with Montreal police

MONTREAL – A 41-year-old man is dead after an altercation with Montreal police on Monday night.

The incident took place at a boarding house on St. Andre Street near Ontario just before 6 pm EST, when police were called to the residence after a woman was reported unconscious.

They arrived at the scene and were confronted by several aggressive people.

According to police, the situation escalated and 41-year-old Donald Menard attacked several officers, apparently striking one in the face, breaking several teeth.

In their attempts to restrain the Menard, he was critically injured and transferred to hospital, where he later died.

The police response reportedly included the use of “several intermediate weapons,” which have been revealed to include an electric stun gun (or Taser), pepper spray and batons.

The case has been transferred to Quebec provincial police, who will conduct an investigation.

Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Claude Denis confirmed the identity of the man, noting that he had been reported missing from the Pinel Institute on Sunday.

Denis also noted that one officer had suffered head injuries in the altercation, while three others suffered minor injuries.
