Midland, Ont. man faces 57 charges in identity theft investigation

TORONTO – Ontario Provincial Police have arrested a 47-year-old Midland, Ont. man in connection to a 20-month identity theft investigation.

Ontario Provincial Police say they were led to the accused, Robert Shawn Maitland, following a routine traffic stop on Highway 400 in January of 2012.

Police concluded Maitland had assumed a number of aliases and was subsequently arrested.

Further investigation revealed the accused stole the identity of Brian Perrault and used his ID to obtain various false driver’s licenses, vehicle registration and license plates in both Ontario and Alberta.

Maitland now faces 57 charges including fraud under $5,000, possession of stolen property, identity theft and breach of probation.

The victim, speaking at a police press conference on Tuesday, said the theft of his identity “has been a nightmare that has lasted for nearly a decade.”

“I became aware my identity was compromised in 2005,” Perrault said. “I have now received traffic charges in at least four different jurisdictions and two provinces that were never issued to me.”

“The theft of my identity has cost me thousands of dollars, 10 years of aggrevation, and six months of not being able to work.”

OPP say there could be more victims related to the accused and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
