Mission school closed Tuesday due to threatening graffiti

The largest elementary school in Mission will get an extra day off tomorrow after RCMP suggested the school be closed due to some threatening graffiti sprayed on the building.

Earlier Monday, graffiti was found on the back of the Ecole Christine Morrison Elementary School, which includes an early bilingual program and roughly 500 students. The RCMP were called in to investigate the unspecified threat and recommended for safety reasons, the school be closed on Tuesday.

Some staff manned the phones in the school today to notify parents and staff about the school’s closing.

“Tomorrow the RCMP are coming back to look around,” Bill Fletcher, Superintendent Mission School District says. “So hopefully we can open the school on Wednesday.”

Although the school doesn’t have a “real problem with graffiti”, says Fletcher, they have dealt with this issue a few times in the past.

Police and school officials don’t want to publicize the specific threat written on the wall because it could hamper their investigation or it may give the suspect a sense of satisfaction. Police say they have the situation in hand and if they catch the person who issued the threat and disrupted classes, they could face charges.

The threatening graffiti has been painted over.
