REGINA- The City of Regina revealed that Reginans owe over $3 million in unpaid parking fines.
“With a bill outstanding of $3 million, it’s something we need to make a priority,” said Ward 7 councillor Sharron Bryce.
The top five offenders in Regina owe between $21,000 and $33,000 each. “People need to know that it needs to be paid just like any other bill that they have,” Bryce said.
The city is sending out reminders. Thirty-nine have been delivered with another 40 on the way. The letter states you must pay, or start a plan to pay your fines within thirty days. If you don’t, the city has other options.
“We can seize their vehicle. We can put a lean on their vehicle. We can sell their vehicle. We can send it to collections, and it would impact their credit rating,” said Bryce.
To aid enforcement, parking officials are using a new license plate scanner to more efficiently target parking violations.
The technology allows them to find many more offenders than traditional foot patrols. But, with a price tag of $41,000, they’ll need to collect on some of those outstanding fines to pay for scanners for the rest of their fleet.
On January 1st, the city is doubling minimum parking fines to $20.
