Canada well represented in 2014 People’s Choice Awards nominations

TORONTO — Nominations for the 2014 People’s Choice Awards have been announced– and Canada is well represented.

Fans can vote for their favourites until Dec. 5. The awards will be handed out Jan. 8 in Los Angeles.

London, Ont.-born actor Ryan Gosling is up against Channing Tatum, Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman and Leonardo DiCaprio in the Dramatic Movie Actor category.

Ontario natives Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) and Stana Katic (Castle) are contenders for Favourite Dramatic TV Actress along with Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU) and Pauley Perrette (NCIS).

Katic and Edmonton’s Nathan Fillion are nominated for their On-Screen Chemistry on Castle.

Edmonton-born Michael J. Fox, who grew up in Vancouver, is a nominee in the Favourite Actor in a New TV Series category. His eponymous series is also up for Favourite New TV Comedy — taking on other Global shows like The Millers (starring Toronto’s Will Arnett) and Sean Saves the World.

Toronto’s Stephen Amell is nominated in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Actor category for his work on the Vancouver-shot series Arrow. Two stars of another B.C.-based series, Supernatural, are up against him — Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.

Canadians dominate the Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress category. Toronto-raised Nina Dobrev, Regina-born Tatiana Maslany (of the Toronto-shot Orphan Black) and Vancouver native Kristin Kreuk (from the made-in-Toronto series Beauty and the Beast) are joined by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and Ginnifer Goodwin of the Vancouver-filmed series Once Upon a Time.

The Toronto-shot series Reign and Beauty and the Beast and Vancouver-filmed shows Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Once Upon a Time, Supernatural and The Tomorrow People also earned nominations.

A number of made-in-Canada movies are in the running at the People’s Choice Awards. The Vancouver-shot Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and Montreal-made The Smurfs 2 are both up for Favourite Family Movie while the Toronto-filmed Carrie and Mama are both nominated in the Horror Movie category. In the running for Favourite Thriller Movie are Montreal-made flicks Red 2 and White House Down.

In the music categories, B.C. crooner Michael Bublé boasts two nominations — Favourite Male Artist and Favourite Album (To Be Loved). Toronto rapper Drake takes on Jay Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the Hip-Hop Artist honour.

Favourite R&B Artist nominees include half-Canadian Robin Thicke, whose Blurred Lines album also got a nod for Favourite Album.

People’s Choice Award nominations also went to Global shows like Glee, Chicago Fire, The Good Wife, Bones, NCIS, The Blacklist, Dracula and Sleepy Hollow.
