One person is dead and another is in hospital after police tried arresting a wanted man in B.C.’s Southern Interior on Tuesday morning.
“While attempting to enforce the warrants, the man allegedly produced a weapon and was shot by police,” said the RCMP. “The incident continued and the woman was also shot as a result.”
Police say the attempted arrests took place around 7:45 a.m., and that the man died at the scene, while the woman was transported to hospital in serious condition.
Callers to AM730 on Tuesday morning told Global News there were a lot of police cars in the area, along with an ambulance.
A portion of Highway 3 near the scene was temporarily closed on Tuesday morning before being reopened.
Police also said “due to potential dangers at the location, the B.C. RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit has been contacted and will be attending the scene. The area has been cordoned off and secured.”
RCMP say the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) has been notified.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in B.C., and it investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
