Accused in N.S. stabbing that paralyzed man to remain in custody

PICTOU, N.S. – A 19-year-old man charged in a stabbing that left another man paralyzed in Nova Scotia will remain in custody until at least the end of the month.

Scott Jones of New Glasgow, N.S., was paralyzed from the waist down after he was stabbed early Saturday morning.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The fiance of the 27-year-old man’s sister says he believes Jones was attacked because he’s gay, but police say they have no evidence to indicate it was hate crime, though they are still investigating.

Shane Edward Matheson faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Matheson made a brief appearance Tuesday in Pictou provincial court, where the Crown said it was opposed to his release.

The defence consented to Matheson remaining in jail until Oct. 31 to allow time to go over disclosure prior to a bail hearing.
