Surrey city employee accused of stealing thousands

Surrey Mayor Diane Watts has confirmed that a fired city employee under investigation by police is accused of "attempting to defraud the city."

CKNW reports that the male employee is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars, but that allegation has not yet been confirmed by The Province.

“We are treating these fraud allegations very seriously and have acted swiftly and decisively,” said Watts in a statement released on Thursday. “We are working closely with the RCMP and I’m confident that anyone charged in this case will be held fully accountable for their actions… We are unable to release further details at this point because we do not want to jeopardize the case.”

The city hired independent firm KPMG in February to conduct a forensic audit into the matter, which found that an even more in-depth investigation is necessary. The reports were handed over to the RCMP, who are now investigating. The city says it is also taking action to adjust its internal control systems to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
