UPDATE: Auburn Bay blaze forces four families from their homes

CALGARY – An enormous fire in the city’s southeast on Tuesday morning forced four families from their homes.

The blaze broke out in a duplex in the 100 block of Auburn Bay Boulevard S.E. around 2 a.m. An employee with Calgary Parking Authority  first spotted the fire and woke residents up to warn them.

“I looked outside from the downstairs window, and it was all orange,” says neighbour Leah Jenkins. “You could just see the glow from the fire because it was just two houses down.”

Flames quickly engulfed the home, completely destroying it. One unit in a duplex next door suffered damage, as did a home on the opposite side. The blaze was fueled by ruptured gas lines.

In the early stages of the fire, crews evacuated about 100 people from surrounding homes due to the heat and large volume of smoke.

Two dogs were saved from the homes, although black two cats remain missing.

“I’m just thankful that we’re all still here and nobody was hurt,” says Kimberley Jenkins, who lives in the area. “That’s the main thing, that nobody was hurt.”

Officials say the scene will be turned over to fire investigators who will begin to establish the cause of the fire.

12 to 15 people are now out of their home indefinitely.
