NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. – The North Battleford fire department is focusing on kitchen blazes during fire prevention week that runs until Oct. 12.

This year’s theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries in Canada, according to North Battleford Fire Department (NBFD).

There have been 25 house fires in North Battleford, so far this year.

“Often when we’re called to a fire that started in the kitchen, the residents tell us they only left the kitchen for a few minutes,” said Kevin Steinborn, deputy fire chief of prevention.

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Wear tight-fitting clothing.
  • Keep a proper fitting lid nearby.
  • Never attempt to move a burning pot.

The local fire department is holding a number of events throughout the week to raise public awareness.

NBFD offers free home fire safety inspections throughout the year but those who book during October will be entered in a draw for useful prevention materials.

A student from each school will win an opportunity to be “Fire Chief for a day.” The lucky students get a tour of the fire department, try out gear and have a pizza lunch with firefighters.

On Wednesday, the ‘Smokey on a Bun’ luncheon is taking place at the NBFD to raise money for the burn unit fund from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
