Smoldering deck prompts Kelowna apartment complex evacuation

KELOWNA — A brief scare for residents of an apartment complex in Kelowna Thursday after fire broke out

Crews were called to the 500 block of Houghton Road at around 4 p.m. after some tenants noticed something smoldering on the deck.

The building had to be evacuated as crews doused the flames.

Officials believe the fire started as a result of some work being done on the deck.

“They had some vinyl decking put on the deck and in that application they used a torch to seal the seams. So were speculating that could be the cause of the fire,” says Tim Light of the Kelowna Fire Department.

Officials say it had the potential to be a serious fire.
