Toronto police have identified a suspect vehicle wanted in connection with a drive-by shooting that left five men with serious injuries in Scarborough last week.
The force said on April 16, at 1 a.m., officers received a report of a shooting in the Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue East area.
Police said a group of people had just finished their evening prayers and were gathering in a plaza parking lot while they decided where to get food.
Officers said the occupant of a vehicle drove by the group and shots were fired.
According to police, five out of six men present suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to hospital suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Toronto police Staff Supt. Lauren Pogue said police have identified a suspect vehicle, and are now searching for a dark blue, four-door sedan.
She said the vehicle has dark custom or winter steel tire rims.
Pogue said the vehicle had “several occupants” at the time of the incident.
According to Pogue, the vehicle was seen on Hiscock Boulevard at around 1 a.m.
Pogue said the vehicle was last seen driving northbound on Markham Road after the shooting occurred.
Pogue told reporters that there is currently “no evidence” to suggest the incident was hate-motivated.
“I want to stress that we have not uncovered any evidence to date that suggests the victims were targeted because they are Muslim,” she said. “I hope that this provides comfort to the community.”
She said there is also no evidence to suggest the victims incited the incident, or that they are involved in gang activity.
Pogue said officers are working “around the clock” and are still canvassing the area and speaking to witnesses.
