Chinook Centre mall fire deliberately set

A fire at Chinook Centre was deliberately set, investigators said Monday.

The fire on Sunday was confined to an industrial part of the mall not normally accessible to the public, but prompted officials to evacuate the shopping centre and neighbouring movie theatre complex.

An investigator said the fire started in a container of liquid that was left in a hallway near the mall’s food court.

"There’s no question someone ignited it with the intent to cause damage," said Det. Brad Weinberger.

For investigative reasons, police aren’t specifying what the liquid was.

Damage was limited to some scorched paint on the wall, but sprinklers set off by the blaze caused some water damage.

Officials are still tallying the cost of the damage.

"We still have to get in there once it’s dry," said Paige O’Neill, Chinook Centre’s retail property manager.
