TORONTO – The funerals for three of the six people killed in last week’s deadly collision in Ottawa between a Via Rail train and a city bus were held Thursday.

Karen Krzyzewski, Rob More and Kyle Nash were laid to rest today.

Funerals for two other victims were held earlier this week.

Connor Boyd, a 21-year-old Carleton University student, was the first of the victims to be buried on Monday. More than 1,000 mourners attended the memorial service

On Wednesday, a funeral service was held for Michael Bleakney. The 57-year-old was described by his family as an avid cyclist who spent much of his time dedicated to his family.

On Sept. 18, six people were killed and more than 30 were injured when an OC Transpo bus collided with a Via Rail train in Ottawa’s west end. The driver of the bus, Dave Woodard, was one of the six people killed.

Three victims remain in Queensway Carleton Hospital, and one in Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus–all in satisfactory condition. A Queensway spokesperson said Thursday that plans are being made for their three patients to return home, perhaps as early as this weekend.

Victims remembered

A mother of two, 53-year-old Krzyzewskiloved to laugh and cared for her family and friends unconditionally and with great passion, as she did with all she embraced,” according to her obituary.

“She was a kind and gentle soul with gifts and talents far too numerous to list,” it read.

The friends and family of Rob More said the 35-year-old “lived his life to the fullest” and “knew how to make people laugh.

Kyle Nash, 21, was in his fourth year of studying Interactive Multi-media and Design at Carleton University.

“We are all comforted by having had 21 wonderful years to have watched him grow into the amazing individual that he was,” read his obituary. “The loss of such a presence at such a young age is wrong, unfair, and creates a searing abyss.”

A public funeral service is planned for 45-year-old Woodard on October 2.  In honour of his memory, family and friends are invited to wear green—David’s favourite colour – at the service.

The investigation continues

Last week, Transportation Safety Board investigators said that the safety gates, lights and bells at the level crossing were functioning as they were supposed to and had been activated 47 seconds prior to impact.
