Watch: Raw video from the scene of the fire
MONTREAL – Montreal police have arrested a 51-year-old man after a store caught fire early Tuesday morning.
The fire caused significant damage at SOS Velo, a not-for-profit bicycle repair shop in the neighbourhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
“Firefighters arrived at the scene and were not able to determine the origins of the fire, which is why the case was transferred to the arson squad,” confirmed a spokesperson for the Montreal police.
Apparently the fire began in a trailer at the back of the building, which was being used for storage. It spread quickly to the roof of the repair shop.
It took about an hour for firefighters to put out the fire. There were no injuries.
Guy LaRocque, SOS Velo’s general manager, said that the store would likely be closed for several days. He estimated that repairs could cost more than $100,000.
SOS Vélo a non-profit organization that builds and re-sells bicycles while helping adults aged between 18 and 55 to re-integrate into the workplace.
