Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has tested positive for COVID-19, as have two of his children.
In a tweet sent Monday morning, Trudeau said he is “feeling fine” and will continue working remotely for the week. Trudeau had said on Jan. 27 that he was isolating after being notified of an exposure. The Canadian Press later reported one of his children had tested positive.
Trudeau is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and received his booster dose on Jan. 4, 2022.
He has said previously that he would inform Canadians if he ever tested positive for the virus.
His wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, tested positive for COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic.
In a press conference on Monday, Trudeau addressed the test results and said he has no symptoms.
“It’s a big challenge that my family and I are facing. But there’s nothing unusual or special about it,” he said. “It’s a challenge too many Canadians and people around the world know all too well.”
Trudeau added it is “frustrating” that COVID-19 remains so dominant in the lives of Canadians two years after it first emerged, but that he continues to encourage people to get vaccinated.
“I wish I could tell you there are no more difficult moments ahead. We all know I can’t say that,” he said. “What I can say is your government will have your back for as long as it takes, with whatever it takes.”
His comments came as demonstrators opposing COVID-19 public health measures continue to blockade and disrupt the downtown core of the nation’s capital.
“Several” criminal investigations are underway, according to Ottawa police.
