UPDATE: Fire crews battle massive Bearspaw blaze

CALGARY – Firefighters spent over an hour battling a massive blaze in the northwest edge of the city on Friday morning.

Crews rushed to the 200 block of Waterside Court around 6:30 a.m., where thick black smoke could be seen pouring from the home.

“It went from pretty moderate, to controlled, and then it exploded,” recalled witness Troy Stock. “Flames were 20 feet through the roof.”

The blaze was so intense that fire crews from Calgary were called in to help. Surrounding homes were filled with air, to keep the flames away.

“They kept the neighbouring homes pressurized, it makes it hard for the flame to impinge on them,” explains Judy Unsworth from Rocky View County Fire.

The house is a two-storey home and is currently under construction. It was being built by ‘Homes by Us’ in the Watermark development in the community of Bearspaw near 12 Mile Coulee Road N.W.
