Travelling exhibit honours exceptional Canadians

CALGARY- A new exhibit was officially launched on Monday morning, that’s aimed at inspiring young Canadians.

It’s an Honour’ is a multi-media display which showcases Canadian heroes who have been honoured by the governor general. Governor General David Johnston was at Calgary’s Henry Wise Wood School for the unveiling.

He says he hopes the exhibit helps young Canadians understand their past.

“I hope they learn each of us has something to give,” says Johnston. “When they see some of the people featured, they say ‘I can do that as well.’”

People being honoured through the exhibit include Sidney Crosby, Commander Chris Hadfield and Terry Fox—who Johnston calls his personal hero.

“Terry Fox’s legacy lives on. There are over 60 countries that have a Terry Fox run, over half a billion dollars has been raised for cancer research around the world. Here’s a Canadian who has had that impact on the entire globe, and has had an impact.

“That’s one of many Canadians that has inspired me.”

Students who were there for the unveiling add it showed them that anything is possible in this country.

“I was definitely inspired just knowing that everyday people can do amazing things,” says Minghao Ji. “You don’t have to be born under extraordinary circumstances to do special things in Canada.

The exhibit is open to the public until September 17, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will then tour across Canada for the next two years.
