Saskatchewan filmmaker debuts short at TIFF

SASKATOON – A Saskatchewan Métis filmmaker is making history at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Wakening, a short film directed by Danis Goulet, debuted Thursday night at the Elgin Theatre prior to the opening screening of The Fifth Estate.

It is the first independently-produced short film to open the festival.

“It was really nerve-wracking, you have your fingers crossed that the sounds not going to cut out or whatever, but it went amazingly well and it was amazing to be there with my family who were in town from Saskatchewan and my cast and crew and it was really fantastic,” said Goulet.

The story is a post-apocalyptic tale with an aboriginal twist, where a wanderer is searching for a monster – an evil spirit – she grew up hearing in northern Saskatchewan.
