Monster skyscaper to house downtown residents and grocery chain
At 55 stories it would be almost twice the height of Winnipeg’s existing tallest building.
Toronto developers Fortress Real Developments and Mady Development Corporation, have purchased the surface parking lot at the corner of Garry Street and Graham Avenue and had already announced plans to build a new downtown tower there.
Friday they announced details of a skyscraper to dwarf all others from Toronto to Calgary.
More than four hundred suites will fill 45 floors, with a 9-story structure on the top taking the building to a never-before seen height in the Winnipeg skyline.
Fortress Real Developments President Jawad Rathore, told Global News Friday they’ve already had plenty of interest.
“Strong interest from a lot of people, who want to be investors and buy the units to rent them out, so we do expect there to be a significant element of the building that will be owner occupied and investor landlord as well.”
The 730-thousand square foot development will be anchored by what the developers are calling “Class-A” retail and a national grocery store chain.
It’s something downtown residents and urban planners have been longing for to create a community, not just housing.
“We’re seeing the downtown grocer become a key point for these projects, because people want to live in downtown but they have to be able to walk to get the bare necessities,” said Urban Planner Jino Distasio.
The development is expected to cost more than 200-million dollars, with the first shovels in the ground by spring 2015.
