Peel Regional Police say a five-year-old boy is dead after he was struck by a vehicle in Mississauga on Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Hurontario Street and Elm Drive, just south of Burnhamthorpe Road, at 5:34 p.m.

“Upon arrival, emergency services located a five-year-old child suffering from life-threatening injuries,” Const. Akhil Mooken said.

“That child was subsequently transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.”

The boy has since been pronounced dead.

Mooken said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating.

The child was attempting to cross the road on a bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle and dragged a short distance, Mooken said.

He said the boy was with his father at the time of the incident. There is no word on whether the boy was wearing a helmet.

“On behalf of Peel Regional Police, we’d like to express our condolences to the family and friends of this child and to all others that have been affected by this tragic incident,” Mooken said.

Mooken said that it’s too early to determine whether or not charges will be laid. He added that there is no indication currently that the driver was impaired.

Peel police’s Major Collision Bureau is now investigating and witnesses are being asked to contact police.
