Going over the edge

It’s tough to beat the rush of standing on the edge of a 17-storey building, with your heels hanging over our city’s famed Portage Avenue.

Your heart races, while you try to focus on the final instructions before it’s time to lean back and trust the commitment you made to rappel off a downtown office tower.

One after another, more than 70 people extended their bodies out horizontally over the edge of the Royal Bank building near Portage and Main and took that first heart-thumping step down the side of the concrete wall.

This opportunity comes along once a year thanks to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities / Easter Seals Foundation. The annual fundraiser gives people the opportunity to do something wildly exciting while helping out a great cause.

The Drop Zone event raises money to support programs and services that reach more than 47,000 children, youth and adults with disabilities in Manitoba.

This year the event will raise about $100,000.

Even before the final participant goes over the edge on this picture-perfect August day, organizers are planning for next year. Registration for 2014 begins in December.

Everyone who takes the journey down the outside of the building with rope in hand is considered a “superhero” for the day – which is a title that’s tough to resist.

So is the amazing view from 60 metres above Portage Avenue.
