Watch: Authorities seize a ball python after it was found in a North York home. Laura Zilke reports.
TORONTO – Toronto Animals Services (TAS) seized a python from a North York home Tuesday evening.
The animal welfare agency received a call from a homeowner near Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue alerting them to a large snake in their garage.
TAS officers responded and found a metre-long ball python. They couldn’t find the snake’s owners, so the snake was taken to a nearby animal shelter.
The ball python is not illegal in Toronto, just as the rock python that killed two boys earlier this week was not illegal to own in New Brunswick.
The ball python usually measures less than four feet or 1.2 metres in length according to the University of Florida.
The city of Toronto, however, prohibits snakes longer than three metres or 9.8 feet. City bylaws also prohibit any poisonous snakes. Ball pythons are not poisonous.
A person found to be in possession of an illegal snake could face a fine of up to $5,000.
