Buck bounced as Bombers’ starting QB; hopes now lie with Goltz

WINNIPEG — The Buck Pierce era ended in Winnipeg Thursday, as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced the veteran but oft-injured quarterback will take a back seat to 25-year-old Justin Goltz.

The younger pivot will be the team’s starter from here on, with 31-year-old Pierce in the role of backup and mentor.

Bombers head coach Tim Burke made the announcement at Investors Group Field, where the team returned for its first practice since being beaten 37-24 against Calgary last week. Goltz was the starter in that game: He completed 19 out of 35 passes for a total of 194 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.

“From this point forward, going forward, Justin Goltz will be our starting quarterback,” Burke said. “Buck will transition into a backup role and also assist (offensive co-ordinator) Gary Crowton.”

The Bombers have just one win and four losses this season, which many hoped would be a breakout year after the team missed the playoffs last season.

The Bombers play in Vancouver Monday against the BC Lions.
