WINNIPEG – The morning commute is a little longer for some drivers with the closure of Plessis Road for underpass construction.

Plessis is closed between Dugald Road and Kernaghan Avenue until December 2014 to allow the construction of a $77-million underpass under a railway crossing. It closed on Sunday, making the Monday morning commute the first rush hour with the road closed.

Residents in the area have protested the closure, asking that a temporary road be built to avoid rerouting traffic through the surrounding residential neighbourhood.

The city has asked drivers to avoid using Bournais Drive as an alternate route because of the presence of Bernie Wolf Community School on the road.
