Wildfire near Kamloops Lake spans 65 hectares

What started as a brush fire yesterday outside of Kamloops, B.C. has turned into a 65 hectare-wide wildfire burning out of control.

The fire north of Kamloops Lake, which the Wildfire Management Branch believes was human-caused, initially spanned 11 hectares before spreading quickly. Due to extremely dry conditions, it now covers 65 hectares.

Firefighters are attempting to suppress the fire from the ground and the air but the wind is making it difficult and dangerous for the crews on the ground.

“The fire is burning grass and sage brush, which means it’s spreading quite quickly,” says Melissa Welsh from the Wildfire Management Branch. “The wind, is posing a challenge for fire suppression efforts because it is being carried by [the wind].”

With very dry conditions and large sections of the province being under a high or extreme danger warning, it’s a fire that could have been avoided.

“The forest fields out there are extremely dry especially heading into this weekend with the wind we’re experiencing and anticipating tomorrow,” Welsh explains. “We really need the public to be vigilant with their fire use. This fire was believed to be human caused and therefore preventable.”

An evacuation alert has not been issued for the area since the fire near the Kamloops Lake is not expected to threaten any of the nearby homes. Crews continue to battle the fire.
