Taxi bylaw amendments proving difficult

SASKATOON – Bylaw amendments to regulate the taxi industry in Saskatoon have been under debate since 2010.

Another revision of the bylaw was presented Tuesday at the city’s administration and finance committee meeting.

Proposed changes include mandatory on-board safety cameras, road testing, driver dress code and language testing for cab operators. It would also stop any vehicles older than seven model years from operating as a cab.

Another report recommends issuing more licenses for accessible taxis and also the addition of seasonal licenses to help during peak times in winter.

Shelley Sutherland, the city’s revenue branch manager, says it’s been difficult getting all stakeholders on the same page.

“When there’s opportunity for income and who will be seen as winners and losers, that’s part of the challenge” said Sutherland.

The time allotted for the committee meeting expired prior to all parties being on the same page.

A special meeting has been scheduled on August 13 to finish the discussion.
