Albums by Metric, Whitehorse among those on Polaris Music Prize short list

TORONTO — Albums by Metric and Whitehorse are among the 10 named on the Polaris Music Prize short list, which was unveiled Tuesday morning at the Drake Hotel.

Toronto-based Metric’s Synthetica and Hamilton, Ont. folk rock band Whitehorse’s The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss made the cut, as well as Calgary-born Tegan and Sara’s Heartthrob, Vancouver group Young Galaxy’s Ultramarine, Edmonton electronic music act Purity Ring’s Shrines, Toronto band METZ’s self-titled album, Nanaimo, B.C. native Zaki Ibrahim’s Every Opposite, Montreal-based Colin Stetson’s New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light, Montreal band Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! and Ottawa-based A Tribe Called Red’s Nation II Nation.

A winner will be announced at a gala on Sept. 23.

The $30,000 prize is awarded to the previous year’s best Canadian album, as decided by a jury of over 200 music writers, broadcasters and programmers.

The finalists were taken from the 40-name Polaris Music Prize long list, announced in June.

Repeat finalists are A Tribe Called Red (2012 long list), Metric (2006 and 2009 short lists), Young Galaxy (2010 and 2011 long lists) and Tegan and Sara (2008 long list, 2010 short list).

Past winners of the Polaris Music Prize include Feist’s Metals (2012), Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs (2011).
