CALGARY – The Calgary Board of Education unveiled its new building complex on Tuesday.
The new facility on 8th Street southwest cost $160-million to build, however, the CBE will not own the building.
Instead, it will be leased at a cost of $280-million over the next 20 years – the CBE says it’s a good deal for the taxpayers.
The board is more concerned about possible teacher layoffs this fall, after the provincial budget failed to provide enough funds to pay for teacher salary increases.
“What we know now is we have a deficit of $60 million,” says CBE spokesperson Ted Flitton.
“How that will translate going forward into the classroom in not clear but we do think there will be an impact on our staff, especially our teachers.”
The CBE says it will take three months to finalize its budget for the fall.
It’s old headquarters on MacLeod Trail will go up for sale this summer.
