26-year-old man dead after Peel Regional Police-involved shooting in Brampton

A 26-year-old man is dead after a police-involved shooting in Brampton‘s west end Monday afternoon.

A Peel Regional Police spokesperson said officers were called to a home on Sawston Circle, north of Chinguacousy Road and Bovaird Drive West, just after 5:20 p.m. with reports of a domestic incident.

The spokesperson said police went into the home and there was an “encounter” between residents.

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), issued a statement to say two officers used their Tasers on the man. The statement said an officer subsequently shot multiple times and the man was hit.

A Peel Paramedics spokesperson posted on Twitter that the patient was being treated for life-threatening injuries. But the police spokesperson said the man died in the home.

The specific circumstances leading up to the shooting were still unclear as of Monday night.

The SIU invoked its mandate and is looking into the conduct of the responding officers.
