WINNIPEG – The Pas and surrounding communities have declared a local state of emergency as they deal with the weekend’s heavy rainfall and prepare for flood waters coming from Alberta.
The Pas, the Rural Municipality of Kelsey and Opaskwayak Cree Nation declared the emergency due to potential flooding along the Saskatchewan and Carrot rivers.
“We’re asking people that live in the areas that could be susceptible to please sandbag, try to protect their properties,” public information officer Elsie Reid said.
A news release from the province predicts the Saskatchewan River near The Pas will approach 2011 levels as flood water from Alberta moves through Saskatchewan and into Manitoba. The crest is expected in eight to 10 days, the province said.
The communities are seeking help preparing sandbags and looking for one or more emergency phone line operators.
Meanwhile, a state of emergency continues in the RM of Pipestone, where more than 70 homes may be damaged and about a dozen roads are closed due to overland flooding on the weekend. The community of Reston in Pipestone got more than 17 centimetres of rain over the weekend.
The Winnipegosis state of emergency ended as flood waters receded on Monday.
