Surrey Hindu temple targeted by vandals

Surrey’s Vedic Hindu Cultural Society is “quite disturbed” after a temple’s windows were smashed in what it alleges is a hate crime.

Security footage from the Hindu Mandir temple on 140 St. captured two men approach the building, smash the windows and flee the scene.

According to president of the Vedic Hindu Cultural Society, Parshotam Goel, a bat with a Sikh symbol on it was left behind. He has since contacted police and handed over the footage.

Surrey RCMP are investigating the incident as an act of vandalism, but say they don’t consider it a hate crime.

Goel disagrees.

“They left after breaking the windows and leaving those bats, which is self-explanatory,” he said. “When I came to know those facts I felt it’s not a regular break-in where somebody wants to damage, it’s a hate crime.”

“Which is unfortunate and disturbing.”

According to Goel, repairing the damage could cost up to $1,500 – but he’s more interested in catching the culprits.
