Dufferin Street in Toronto voted Ontario’s worst road

TORONTO – For a second year in a row, Toronto’s Dufferin Street has been voted the worst road in Ontario, according to the Canadian Automobile Association’s top 10 list released Tuesday.

Since the CAA’s Worst Roads List was created, Dufferin Street has been nominated seven times while Steeles Avenue has earned eight tallies.

In total, half of the roads on this year’s list are from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

The results were tabulated from a month long web campaign which received over 10,000 votes.

“While the popularity of the campaign continues to grow, it demonstrates that infrastructure remains a critical issue for Ontarians,” said Faye Lyons, Government Relations, CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) in a press release.

Last year, roads in Toronto held five spots on the list of the 10 worst roads in the province.

CAA SCO has called on the province to better allocate gas tax sharing tools to improve funding for road, highway and bridge repairs.

“Gas tax sharing is needed now to prevent the further deteriorating of our municipal roads and bridges,” said Geoff Wilkinson, Executive Director, Ontario Roads Builders’ Association. “Predictable and sustainable funding will enable municipalities to better manage their road and bridge assets, thereby helping to minimize the long-term road repair bill.”
