Driving in Manitoba could soon cost more.
Manitoba Public Insurance announced Friday it is applying for a rate increase.
MPI said in a press release it has asked the Public Utilities Board for a 1.8 per cent increase on Autopac rates.
If approved, more than 700,000 registered vehicles will see premiums increase.
MPI said the proposed increase will equate to less than $50 for two-thirds of vehicles and approximately $18 for an average family passenger vehicle.
The PUB will make a decision this Fall, and if approved, rate increases would take effect March 1, 2014.
However, MPI said some Manitobans may not start paying the new rates until February 2015 due to staggered renewals.
According to the insurer, it’s the first time in a decade MPI has asked for a rate increase.
