A black bear has been caught in a trap in Surrey, on the same property where a bear killed a goat, shortly after attacking a llama, but it is not the same bear.

Conservation officer Jack Trudgian determined it was not the same bear that was killing livestock. This bear, a four to six year-old male, will be tagged and then released.

The bear conservation officers are looking for was first spotted last Thursday near Tynehead Park, in the area of 96 Avenue and 176 Street.

On Friday it tracked down and attacked a llama. The owner of the llama then tried to chase it off with a broom, but when it reared up and charged he shot it with his rifle.

The bear then ran off into the neighbouring property and killed a goat.

“It didn’t really eat the goat,” said its owner George Hoffman. “It broke its neck, and left it there. Then dragged it around a little bit and left it. So I suspect it’s a serious bear. It’s not your average garbage-can-tipping bear.”
