4-H Achievement / Show and Sale

Nine 4H Clubs are celebrating some big events at Exhibition Park in Lethbridge this Friday and Saturday.  100 years of 4H and the hard work of their members with an Achievement Day on Friday and Show and Sale on Satuday.

“It’s like the final day,” said Shaelynn Adams from the Del Bonita 4H Beef Club,  “to show what all your hard work has done and to see how it really pays off.

Some club’s members raise calves, some clubs raise sheep and there are a host of other clubs.   Members do much more than their main project.

Ashley Bodie from the Readymade 4H Beef club said, “You have your public speaking and your judging and your record book keeping.  And all of those are great abilities that each member gets out of 4H.”

Shiela Hillmer, a leader with Del Bonita Beef Club added, “The mentorship among the other kids as they get older and help each other through the clubs.  Meeting other kids throughout other areas that they normally wouldn’t get to meet and mingle with.  Just the overall experience of being part of something. Their motto is learn to do by doing and that’s what we try to teach the kids.”

Ashley Bodie’s main project is raising a calf to show and sell.

“It takes a lot of hard work and patience.  You have to halter break them, feed them, water them, wash them, clip them,” she said.   “There’s so many things that you do with your animals to get them prepared for show and sale.”

Many people associate 4H clubs with farming.  However it’s not just agriculture.  There are clubs, including 4H Multi-Clubs that young people from the city can also belong to.

“You can do crafts, sewing,” said Kyza Taylor from the Milk River 4H Multi-Club.   “You can take your bunny if you have a bunny, your dog.  Any project you want to take they can make a project for you.”

This is the 100th Anniversary of 4H.   The clubs involved in this Achievement day include the Lethbridge-Coaldale 4H Beef Club which is celebrating its own 90th anniversary,  the Wild and Wooly Sheep Club from Lethbridge, the Fort Macleod 4H Beef Club, Del Bonita 4H Beef, Readymade 4H Beef Club and 4H clubs from Warner,  Raymond, and Milk River.
