UPDATE: Police issue warning about man charged with aggravated sexual assault

CALGARY – Police have issued a warning to Calgary women, about a man who has been charged with aggravated sexual assault.

41-year-old John Joseph McNamara was arrested on Tuesday, in connection with an incident that happened in December 2012.

“The victim in this case met the accused at a social function,” explains A/S/Sgt. Ryan Jepson of the Calgary Police Service.

The charge relates to the belief that McNamara has HIV—and is accused of not disclosing his condition to partners.

“Generally speaking, if a person has HIV and does not disclose that information to a sexual partner, they could be charged with aggravated sexual assault, for endangering the life of the individual,” Jepson says.

McNamara is a member of many online dating sites, including Plenty of Fish and MeetUp. On one site, a user cautioned others, saying McNamara is a ‘danger.’
