Pet rabbit dead in Kitsilano home robbery – and another one missing

Vancouver’s Joanna Makowska would “give anything” to get her beloved pet bunny back.

Makowska’s Kitsilano home was broken into May 29. When she came home around 3 p.m. she found her door unlocked, closet doors ajar and jewelry dumped on the ground.

As she walked further into the home she saw her seven-year-old bunny, Bia’s lifeless body lying under her desk, the second rabbit, Milo, nowhere to be found.

“I would give anything I have to get him back – he’s l ike a kid to us,” she said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Initially Makowska assumed Milo was so scared he went into hiding, but with no doors opened at the time there’s no way he could have escaped, and now six days later it’s unlikely he’s somewhere at home.

“As the days went by we kept hoping he’d come out of hiding where he was, but at this point it’s pretty obvious that he’s probably been taken,” she said.

According to Makowska, a necropsy of Bia’s body showed a scratch under her eye and neck injury, so Makowska assumes she was either killed, stepped on, or ran into something out of fright.

Makowska has notified the police and has friends helping to poster and canvas the neighbourhood. She doesn’t care about the other stolen items – she  just wants Milo back.

Milo is a seven-year-old white lion-head rabbit with a thick mane of fur around his neck.

Makowska is offering a reward for his return and asking anyone with information to contact 604-715-0714.
