Search continues for man who fell into Humber River

TORONTO – Rescuers have resumed their efforts to find a man who plunged into the Humber River Wednesday evening.

Toronto Fire chief Jim Slobodian told Global News Wednesday night that rescue efforts had to be suspended when the sun set, as the ensuing darkness would put rescuers be at risk of succumbing to the rushing waters themselves.

The renewed search effort began Thursday morning at around 7 a.m.

A witness said she saw the man jump in the river after his dog fell into the water.

Police say the man entered the river at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday near the entrance to the river on Lawrence Avenue West. But the river’s high waters and fast current made it tough for them to tell at first.

Severe weather overnight Tuesday led to high water levels across the city.

Rescue crews set up a “trap” near the bottom end of the river near Old Dundas Road to try and catch the man.

More to come.
