A suspect is at large after officers responded to reports of shots being fired at the CrossIron Mills shopping centre north of Calgary on Monday evening, according to RCMP.

A spokesperson for the Calgary Police Service confirmed one person had suffered gunshot wounds but they did not elaborate on where the person was believed to have been shot or where they were found.

EMS later told Global News the victim was a man. They said his injuries were not life-threatening but that he was taken to hospital.

“I just suddenly heard all this screaming and saw a massive amount of people — several dozen people — running out of the mall,” said Kendell Beleshko, who was at the mall when the frenzied scene unfolded. “They were screaming and running to their cars and I panicked.”

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., the Alberta RCMP tweeted that “the incident at CrossIron Mills has been resolved.”

However, the tweet did not say how they defined resolved or if any progress had been made in apprehending a suspect.

In the same tweet, RCMP said they “believe that this was a targeted incident” and that “there is no ongoing danger to the public.”

Less than an hour later, RCMP tweeted that the suspect remains on the loose and that police were continuing to clear people from the mall.

Some people who had been in the mall were reportedly unable to go home because their vehicles were blocked off by police tape at the scene as law enforcement officers investigated. Police told Global News a bus was being used to shuttle those people to a nearby hotel.

Members of the RCMP’s Victim Services Unit were expected to be present at the hotel.

Police said multiple units were dispatched to an area in the mall near a movie theatre at around 7 p.m. when the initial shots fired call(s) came in. They confirmed the police helicopter was also called to respond.

“We’ve called in pretty much the whole Airdrie (RCMP) detachment… because the mall is so big,” Cpl. Gina Slaney said.

A Global News crew at the scene said RCMP and paramedics could also be seen at the shopping centre.

“If you have a family member [or] friend in the mall, please know that they will not be released until the mall has been deemed safe. RCMP are asking that everyone stay away from this area so that they can do their jobs safely.”

The lockdown was lifted at about 9:30 p.m.

Jay Singh told Global News he was at the mall with his family when a chaotic scene developed at about 7:30 p.m.

“As we were walking to leave the mall, all the shops were shutting down,” he said. “Everyone was running.

“[RCMP were] yelling to everyone to get out of the mall.”

Singh said he found it odd that he did not hear any announcement about what was happening over the mall’s intercom system.

“When you see people (RCMP) with guns, it’s not normal,” he said. “[The] first thing you want to do is get out of the mall.”
