Kids come together to help victims of Lewis Estates fire

EDMONTON – The kids in the Lewis Estates neighbourhood are on a mission. For the second night in a row, they spent their evening working an iced tea stand, with the profits going to help those whose homes were lost or damaged in Sunday’s fire.

“Help the homes! Help the homes!” chanted the kids while holding signs, all with the hopes of bringing in more customers, and more money into their jar.

One of the customers who paid them a visit on Tuesday evening was Brian Logan. His home was mostly destroyed in the fire, so he was especially touched to see the fundraiser the children had organized in his neighbourhood.

“When I heard about what you guys were doing today” Logan tearfully told the kids, “it made me feel so good…you’re such wonderful, wonderful children. I could try and hug you all, but that’s a lot of you.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“They’re angels, they’re absolute angels,” he added.

Young Alexis Morrow came up with the idea for the iced tea stand after seeing smoke billowing from the area on Sunday. Her mom told her it was her friend’s home that was on fire.

“At school (the next day), I said to Jessica: ‘We should make a fundraiser to help the houses. And then it turned into one big idea, and that’s how it started.'”

The idea quickly caught on, and the kids’ sales tactics seem to be working.

“We’re like 20 hundred already,” said Jessica Green, who was working the stand.

“$1,700,” Sarah Gear corrected her.

“Our goal is like $17,000 thousand dollars,” added Alexis.

“So maybe a week,” guessed Sarah, until they reach that goal.

Jessica thinks it might take a couple weeks, but she’s prepared for the long haul.

“We’re going to do it until we reach our goal.”
