Councillor lashes out at some members of the public who opposed Porter expansion

TORONTO – Councillor Mike Del Grande lashed out at members of the public who, at city council Tuesday evening, tried unsuccessfully to get council to reject Porter Airlines’ proposed expansion plans.

“The bullies come in here, into this chamber, and they bully the councillors,” Del Grande said, pointing out some members of the public who were in the council chamber.

Del Grande spoke over attempts by Speaker and councillor Frances Nunziata to quiet him.

“But you people that don’t like it, you come down here and you criticize, and criticize, and criticize,” Del Grande said. “And you’ve got grandchildren, and you’ve got nieces and nephews as well too, and you sit there, smug, because you’ve got it good and other people don’t have it good. I’m sorry. I can’t live with that attitude.”

Porter is attempting to have city council change the rules and allow jets to land at Billy Bishop Island Airport.

The 1983 agreement between city council, the Toronto Port Authority and the federal government prevents jets from landing at the island airport.

But if all three signatories agree, Porter will be able to follow through with its recent purchase of dozens of Bombardier CS100 jets.
