LAKE COUNTRY, BC – A baby boom that will impact schools in Lake Country has prompted the Central Okanagan School District to plan for a new middle school.
School District #23 has announced a tentative agreement to purchase the Aspen Grove golf course property beside George Elliot Secondary School. While the golf course on Bottom Wood Lake Road will not close immediately, it will be leased back for another three years until the school is approved by the Ministry of Education.
The 18 acre site would accommodate play fields and public amenities to support a new middle school on the northern section of the George Elliot property.
A zoning change is also necessary. The golf course is currently zoned to accommodate future play fields, but not for a school. The change would require approval from the Agricultural Land Commission.
The middle school is currently fourth from the top on the list of immediate capital needs in School District #23. The top three have not been identified in the news release from the District.
Lake Country is expecting 500 more students in their schools by 2020, based on the current birth rate in the community.
